| Three weeks until it begins anew
I honestly believe that Kelly Johnson and Escobar are going to be good table setters and that Mccann and Francoeur are going to blossom into big stars. I also expect Chipper Jones to play at least 140 games and have a monster year with Texeira and him having runners on base all year long. Should be fun, can't wait .
Pakistan blocks YouTube for 'blasphemous' content: officials
An inter-ministerial committee has decided to block YouTube because it contained "blasphemous content, videos and documents," a government official told AFP. "The site will remain blocked till further orders," he said. Other officials said the site had been blocked because it contained controversial sketches of the Prophet Mohammed which were republished by Danish newspapers earlier this month. One major service provider, Micronet, said in an email to subscribers that the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority had directed all ISPs to block access to YouTube "for containing blasphemous web content/movies." "Meanwhile Internet users can write to YouTube.com to remove the objectionable web content/movies because this removal would enable the authorities to order un-blocking of this website," the email said.
Elaborate 'pharming' attack targeted 50 banks
An attack this week that targeted online customers of at least 50 financial institutions in the U.S., Europe and Asia-Pacific has been shut down, a security expert said Thursday. The attack was notable for the extra effort put into it by the hackers, who constructed a separate look-alike Web site for each financial institution they targeted, said Henry Gonzalez, senior security researcher for Websense. To be infected, a user had to be lured to a Web site that hosted malicious code exploiting a critical vulnerability revealed last year in Microsoft's software, Websense said. The vulnerability, for which Microsoft had issued a patch, is particularly dangerous since it requires a user merely to visit a Web site rigged with the malicious code. Once lured to the Web site, an unpatched computer would download a Trojan horse in a file called "iexplorer.exe," which then downloads five additional files from a server in Russia.

Queensryche has a tour stop at home
In the late 1980s, it was second only to Heart as the most popular band to come out of Seattle. Dubbed "The Thinking Man's Heavy-Metal Band" because of its smart lyrics and serious approach to music and performance, the band built a following before ever actually playing here. Determined from the start to conquer the world, it bypassed the nightclub route and went straight into the studio. Its independent recordings were hits on local radio, which led to a recording contract with EMI America. The debut "Queensryche" album came out in 1983 to good reviews and impressive sales. After that, the band began doing local shows and touring, building an international audience. Queensryche released its elaborate, political-thriller concept album, "Operation Mindcrime," in 1988, but really hit its stride in 1990 with "Empire," its slickest, most popular release.
Illegal visitors cost Australia $20m in airfares
TAXPAYERS spent more than $20 million on airfares for 5000 people who broke Australia's immigration rules and were kicked out last year. Tourists who overstayed their visas, people who breached working conditions and students who failed their courses were among those deported. Almost 1600 tourists who had overstayed were put in detention centres before being deported. Department of Immigration and Citizenship figures, compiled for The Sunday Mail, show 5056 people had their airfares funded, and where required had escorts, at an average cost of $4081 each. Airfares were only a portion of the detention-and-removal costs billed to deportees, and just a fraction of the cost is recovered by the Department each year. "In 2006-07, DIAC recovered $902,159 from people who had previously been removed from Australia," a Department spokesman said.
Hansen: Criminal past isn't deal-killer at I-80 Re-entry Job Fair
At least 25 companies set up tables on the ground floor for 400 job-seekers. There were local big dogs like Pioneer Hi-Bred, Vermeer and Bankers Trust. There were little guys like Advance Asphalt and Seibert Trucking. There were chains like Arby's, Manpower and O'Reilly Auto Parts. There were social service agencies serving as sponsors with Iowa Workforce Development, Federal Probation and Parole, and the Iowa Department of Corrections. There were tables for filling out applications. There was a sign above one table that said "Public Records Checked While You Wait." There was an interview room and a clothes closet for anyone who needed more starch. Some of the job hunters wore jackets and ties. Some wore jeans and tattoos. A group from the Mitchellville women's prison wore blue prison-issue work scrubs, passed out resumes and made contacts for later.
Library events planned
The third annual “Edible Car Contest" will be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. Families are encouraged to come, build an edible car, race it down the track and see which car travels the farthest. A variety of edible products will be provided but if you have a great idea, it is recommended that you bring it, as there is no guarantee we will think of the same thing. The car must be built and have moving parts. Last year, we received a very nice donation to create a lecture series encouraging the community to make informed decisions about their lives, their community and their world on progressive topics. To kickoff the series we have scheduled a debate among the three main DFL candidates for United States Senate, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, Mike Ciresi, and Al Franken. Mark your calendars now for Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.
Did I really hear this....
Those sections go to about one third of our audience. We corrected the headline the next day in the Accuracy Watch, on the cover of our Northwest section and read by far more people than the Voices can reach. And we'll correct in the Voice sections Thursday, as per policy. I also apologized to French personally. The story under the headline, by reporter Mike Prager, was accurate, French said. No problems with that, just the headline. French talked to me a couple of times last week, at one point even asking me for advice on how he could extricate himself from the ethical morass. I don't advise politicians, explained to him that he'd have to figure that out for himself and offered him a chance to talk to the editorial page folks about a letter or even an op-ed column.
