The Republican Party has long been suckering the "average Joe and Jane", the "little guy", into thinking they are the "party of the people". MEANWHILE, the base of support that helps them now, and helps their children in the future, has been eroded. Both Clinton and Obama are trying to reverse these losses. The Republican Party has invested a huge amount of money, time and effort into portraying it, and its members, as the champions of the "little guy" and the "average person." But, this has been little more than a huge advertising campaign dating back for well over a decade. Here are the basics of the game. It boils down to "I am like you, and my opponent is not." Sadly, Democrats keep trying to show "What I will do for you, and my opponent will not", which doesn't seem to be as effective.

Behind Amazon.com of all companies in actually putting these things together as a product or service companies can buy? Yep.

Sun's mysterious failure to address the potentially meaty market for renting a web infrastructure to fledgling businesses appears on course for a correction. The company plans to unveil a project code-named Caroline in the next couple of months, offering a "hosting platform for development and delivery of dynamically scalable Internet-based services".

Woman returns $15,000 found in road

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - Linda Harwood seems to have a knack for finding lost cash. She was driving on Route 3 in Plattsburgh, New York, earlier this week when she spotted a bag in the middle of the road. It was a bank-deposit bag containing $15,000 in cash. She turned the bag in to Plattsburgh police, who tracked down the bank and the money's owners, a local scrap metal business. An employee says she believes she placed the bag on top of her car during a stop at a local hardware store and drove off with the bag still on the roof. Harwood says returning the money was simply the right thing to do. She says a few years ago she found a pocketbook filled with money in a parking lot. Harwood mailed it back to Vermont woman who had lost it.

Pentagon Aide's Invitations Contradicted U.S. Policy

At the urging of a subordinate, Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England scheduled at least two meetings with foreign emissaries in direct contradiction of U.S. policy at the time. The meetings date back to 2005. They involved a Lebanese ambassador considered a proxy for the Syrian government and a leading member of Syria's Muslim Brotherhood.

U.S. policy at the time was not to engage in talks with either man, because they represent groups with whom the United States was not to communicate. The meetings were organized by England's special assistant for international affairs, Hesham Islam.

An invitation to Muslim Brotherhood official Husam al-Dairi was canceled in late 2005 after a senior State Department official heard about it and insisted it not take place.

Nanopores That Can Recognize, Separate Proteins and Small Molecules

Nanopores, holes less than one-thousand the width of a human hair, are capable of isolating strands of DNA or therapeutic drugs from a solution, based mostly on the size of the pores. Now, a chemist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has created nanopores that can recognize and interact with certain molecules, actively controlling their movement across synthetic membranes. Results were published online Feb. 3 in Nature Nanotechnology. .

Enabling Animal House: America Needs to Create Rational Higher Ed ...

America needs to invest more financial resources to help address a looming shortage of college graduates needed for the high-tech economy of tomorrow. Or do we?

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, current chair of the National Governor's Association, used her 2008 State of the State address to call for doubling the number of college graduates in Arizona by 2020. Napolitano proposed paying the tuition for students who graduate high school with a B average to accomplish this goal.

“We must recognize that higher education is something that all Arizona children will need to succeed," stated Governor Napolitano.

In the Carnegie Foundation's publication Change, Paul Barton wrote that the notion that the U.S. has a dire need for an ever increasing number of college graduates is a myth.

Navigating to retirement

Over the last six months, some of the toughest decisions have been not to make any decisions," said Gold, who also works with the Moores and Scotts. "It's really important to stay the course."

401(k) nest egg For many workers nearing retirement, workplace 401(k) programs represent a nice pot of money. That makes them a tempting place to look for cash as credit conditions tighten.

The issue of whether or not to take a 401(k) loan is one of several key decisions being thrust upon workers as they're forced to assume more control over their retirement plans. Fewer employers offer company-managed pensions, so employees must make more of their own decisions.

The various 401(k)-style retirement plans can be a great way to accumulate wealth. The programs feature tax-sheltered growth and employer-provided matching funds in most cases.

Oil prices shoot above 90 dollars

The commodities market will continue to look for signs of health in the US economy from equities and that will affect prices," said Tony Nunan from Mitsubishi Corp.

Despite recent gains, oil prices are still well off their early January historic highs of 100.09 dollars for New York's light sweet crude and 98.50 dollars for Brent.

"Oil will get support from stocks if they stay strong but may also get some support from China's GDP," said Phil Flynn at Alaron Trading.

China's economy grew 11.4 percent in 2007, reaching the highest level in 13 years and marking the fifth straight year of double-digit growth, the Chinese government said on Thursday. China is meanwhile consuming vast amounts of oil to help power its economy.

But Nunan said the real focus remained on the United States economy.
