In the face of US demand for Canadian oil, the greatest challenge we face is maintaining our sovereignty and democracy. Already that demand has dictated for us Canadian policy on greenhouse gas emissions and the SPP (which is principally about securing energy security and prosperity for the US). The Canadian electorate's opinion is simply bypassed and the important long-term decisions on the future of our country are made behind closed doors by unelected elites.
For example, it was a Jan. 2006 meeting in Houston, Texas, kept secret from the Canadian public for over a year before Radio Canada got a hold of the minutes, that called for a "fivefold expansion" in oilsands production in a relatively "short time span" and encouraged decision-makers "to streamline the regulatory approval process" with a "one-stop-shop" for project proposals to facilitate that expansion.
Don't panic, the kids are all right
Let's make no mistake, there is always a moral in a Wilson story: bad behaviour happens but never triumphs. Her books are valuable in another way, too, as a teacher from an inner-city primary told me: for her children, Wilson's stories reflect their lives and offer reassurance. So as far as I'm concerned Wilson comes close to sainthood, being largely responsible for firing my daughter's love of reading (and as she is now on to Birdsong, I don't think Wilson did her literacy much harm, either). But on the debate she has ignited this week about children growing up too fast and childhood these days ending at 11, I'm afraid we disagree. It is easy to panic about adolescents. We see them in hoodies, hanging around and looking menacing. We see pictures of them in the gutter after binge drinking.

I am very upset at the media for blocking out any information on Alan Keyes. If ANYONE represents the Republican platform, conservatism, and values, it's ALAN. That's probably why he's never mentioned…the media represents Democrats, for the most part, and they don't want anyone to know about a highly-principled man who could lead our country back to being what it should be and not toward more and more socialism. NPR Music Marks Return to 'South by Southwest' by Live Broadcasting ...
February 21, 2008, Washington, D.C. – NPR Music returns to the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Conference and Festival in Austin, TX, next month and, for the first time, will webcast and broadcast live three concerts there. All three shows will be streamed live and archived at NPR.org/music, and will be available for broadcast on NPR Member stations across the country. Selected performances may also be podcast. Additionally, for the second year in a row, NPR and five NPR Member stations – KUT Austin, WFUV New York, WXPN Philadelphia, KEXP Seattle and The Current from Minnesota Public Radio – will offer extensive coverage of the influential music festival on-air and online. New York Jets Fansite Drops Yahoo Webcam Vulnerability Exploit
Yet another web attack targeting the visitors of a very popular website and the vulnerabilities discovered on their computers. This time, the affected page is a New York Jets fansite, which obviously has a lot of visitors every day. Just like the past attacks, the website has been compromised with an embedded Iframe that attempts to take the visitors on another website, apparently hosted in Estonia. Menaker to host new online series
Daniel Menaker, a longtime Gotham lit figure who decamped from Random House as editor-in-chief last spring, is hosting a new online interview series. Touted as a Web first, "Titlepage" will feature roundtable interviews with a group of writers, taking its inspiration from "The Charlie Rose Show," IFC's "Dinner for Five" and the French staple "Apostrophes." The six-episode first season begins March 3 on www.titlepage.tv. "Titlepage" is the "perfect way to share my enthusiasm for books and their authors -- in an instantly and permanently accessible format -- with as many readers as possible," said Menaker. "I've always sought out literary conversations, and I think we can make them surprising and entertaining for anyone who might want to stop by." Though it will have the production values of a TV show, "Titlepage" will seek to exploit its Web trappings by offering forums for discussion and links to online booksellers.
Major Linux security glitch lets hackers in at Claranet
A major security vulnerability in the Linux kernel, which was revealed on Sunday, has claimed its first confirmed UK victim in business ISP Claranet. Hackers used a bug in the sys_vmsplice kernel call, which handles virtual memory management, to gain root privileges and replace Claranet customers' index.html files with the hacker's calling card. .
